So I love art but I always get “stuck” when it comes to the shading of faces in the whimsical portraits I do. I think it has to look perfect (whatever perfect is) so I end up going over and over what I’ve done and making more and more of a mess. Sometimes the uncertainty even stops me from starting a new journal page altogether……..so I decided to just go for it and not over think it. I grabbed my new set of Ranger Dabbers and without any plan or precision laid down a foundation for a face.
Here is the first step
Step Two I defined the features and added a little more shading with my watercolour pencils
Step Three I worked on the eyes and lips plus continued to tweak the shading here and there
Step Four I painted in the hair and did the last bit of finishing touches.
All in all I’m pretty happy with how she turned out. Still need to practise a lot more but hopefully now I won’t let myself get too stuck on perfection.

I love the result. Also must admit that I love the first pic — I’d scrap with that in a heartbeat! TFS!
